Auditorium Review: Short But Sweet

Auditorium is arguably one of the more beautiful indie games that have been developed, and it definitely shines on the iPhone.  One of the major features that makes Auditorium great is, of course, the sound; a factor that was implemented well by EA Mobile.  While it is quite short for a $2.99 price tag, this puzzler should have you singing Beethoven by the time you’re through.


Sounds: Being an audio type of game, Auditorium features a nice amalgamation of noises to create beautiful orchestras of sound.  Personally, sound is a factor that doesn’t quite matter to me in a game, but Auditorium sounded beautiful.  Auditorium is probably the only game in which I will approve of classical music; otherwise, take me off the list.

Graphics: Graphics, artwork, design, whatever you want to call it: it’s beautiful.  The flow of particles through the gauges is very well done, and while the design is simple, it has an aesthetic factor to it.  The developers spent some quality time going through the design and visuals, and Auditorium looks so simple, yet so beautiful at the same time.  It’s almost like looking at a waterfall in a peaceful forest, except on your iPhone.

Original: This is an idea that hasn’t been copied by any other developers before, and while this is EA Mobile we’re talking about, it’s definitely original.  Being an indie title, Auditorium features some of the most original puzzle mechanics I have come across.  We’ve seen many other titles like Flight Control take the award for originality (well, somewhat), and I think Auditorium may just be a contender.


Short: 30 levels, that’s all you get.  It’s somewhat disappointing to see such a sweet game end, and it may be a letdown for some folks.  The game shouldn’t last anyone longer than 3 or 4 hours, but for those looking for short bursts of playtime, Auditorium may be right for you.  Personally, $2.99 is a little too much for a game that lasts 3 to 4 hours.  It would be nice if there was some replay value in it also, but sadly, the game is too simplistic for any replay value at all.

Achievements, Highscores, Etc.: None of that stuff to see here in this game.  It would be nice if there was some sort of achievement system of highscore system to add some replay value into the game, but sadly, there is none.  There is really no motivation to keep playing the game other than beating it, and even then the game won’t last you very long.

Auditorium is basically “you get what you see” type of game.  You won’t receive any extras like online leaderboards or achievements, or any stats.  3-4 hours of gameplay is basically what you’re paying for, and while the game is very well made, it’s hard to really give it our most coveted “Must Have” rating.  Auditorium is definitely a solid game though; it just would have been nice if the developers added something more.


Auditorium was developed by EA Mobile, and I played through version 1.o on my iPhone 3GS.  The price is $2.99 with a lite version available.
