Pro Zombie Soccer Review: iPhone was made for This

Pro Zombie Soccer was released by Chillingo a little while ago, and we’ve had a lot of pre-release hands-on time with it.  And boy oh boy, do we love it.  The controls are unique, the artwork is extreme, and the gameplay is unique enough to be labeled as standing in a genre of its own.

Pro Zombie Soccer is all about shooting zombies in the face with your soccer ball.  You have three powerups: pierce, laser beam, and super speed.  Pierce makes the ball go through multiple zombies without bouncing back, laser beam lasers all zombies in sight, and the super speed just makes the ball bounce around quicker.

Overall, it’s an interesting game that’s sure to please.

Artwork: The artists for the Super Awesome Hyper Dimensional Mega Team (I can never get that right) are extremely talented.  I thought the art was very detailed in terms of zombie design, and the backgrounds weren’t too shabby.  Menu design, while simple, was enough to understand what everything meant.

Controls: You can’t get much simpler than this.  But the controls felt so natural and fluid, even my grandparents were able to somehow figure out how to play.  You really can’t get better controls than this.

Explosions: This is just some good ol’ zombie-romping fun.  Blood everywhere, explosions via space laserbeam… for a guy, you really can’t get a more action-packed game than this on the iPhone.

Slightly repetitive: The action-packed nature of the game cuts down all repetitiveness, but there are times when you just don’t feel the action.  When that happens, you’ll be thinking to yourself about how slightly repetitive it is.  It’s not extreme, but it’s slight.

Does not work on iPhone 4/iOS4?: I booted up the game on my iPhone 4 to test out how it looks and feels, and everything along those lines.  I played the first level only before getting kicked out of action (the game crashed).  I deleted and reinstalled the game only to have the same problem… I hope I’m not the only one since this is one big bug.  Hopefully they figure this one out and release a patch for the game.

Pro Zombie Soccer as a game is a must have experience.  The controls, gameplay, and artwork are just over the top, making this casual game one of the more intriguing.  It’s really a shame it doesn’t really work on my iPhone 4, as that’s the only thing that’s holding this game back.  Of course, if they release a fix for it, I’ll be more than happy to post about it.  For now, it should be safe for most people to buy.

Update: Well there it is.  Pro Zombie Soccer has been fixed to work on 4.0, after I reviewed the game using the iPhone 4.  Of course, I also promised to update the review after the update was released, and now that it’s playable by everyone (hopefully), Pro Zombie Soccer easily receives the Must Have award.

Pro Zombie Soccer was developed by Super Awesome Hyper Dimensional Mega Team, and I played through version 1.0 on my iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4.  The price is $0.99.

slighting contradicting rating you gave that game.
‘Pro Zombie Soccer as a game is a must have experience’
yet you only give it a ‘buy’

also, had this been released before the iPhone four, this would’ve gotten full marks am i right? well then.

The only reason I gave it a buy because it is unplayable on iPhone 4/iOS 4.0. 4.0 has been out for 3-4 days now, and the beta versions have been out for weeks. It should have been updated before the 4.0 release, and now there’s a crashing bug. People would be upset if the game was unplayable and received a Must Have right?

Daniel they submitted an update a while ago and it hasn’t gone through apple yet, it isn’t their fault. I think this should have a Must Have rating.

Like I said, I’ll update the review once an update is released. If a game crashes and is unplayable during the time of review, then I can’t recommend it to everyone.

    Hi, I´m Enrique, PZS Artist.
Thank you very much for your review, Daniel.
I just wanted to let you know we submitted an update to fix that 4.0 bug days ago and we are just waiting for Apple to approve it.
We understand your decision for the review and we just hope you can give the game a higher score when the patch is finally released!
    Thanks a lot!

@Evan: you rock! Thanks a lot man.

That’s exactly what I’m planning to do, thanks Enrique!

  7. [...] Pro Zombie Soccer, developed by the development team with a name too long to actually display, was released at  an uber cheap $0.99 price point with tons of content, fluid controls, and great artwork.  The experience is unique but  doesn’t feel like the developers were trying too hard to stand out, and overall it’s a game we completely recommend you  to pick up.  Just listen to our wise words and do what we say.
