iControlPad Done, Will be Shipping Soon

I received an email this morning from the developers of the iControlPad announcing that it is finally in production and will start shipping soon.  If you haven’t heard of the iControlPad before it is a peripheral control pad, with a layout similar to a PSP, that will work with iDevices. It has been in development for over a year but it looks like the obstacles have been overcome and hopefully will soon be in the hands of iDevice gamers everywhere.

Here’s an excerpt of the email:

It’s been a while, but we have an update about the iControlPad, you
remember, the controller add-on for the iPhone.

Right, well the good news is we are in mass production, some of you
might not have followed the news last year as we tried out several
different designs for the controls and settled on the best one in
November, we posted a video of it in action as well as some
photos on our site:

As you can see the final design has dual analogue nubs, a dpad, 4
action buttons, start, select and two shoulder buttons on the back.

The finish on the version in the video is rough – the final one will
be glossy.

Originally the iControlPad was meant to work with only jailbroken devices running emulators, but taking the extended development time into consideration, we are hoping there are plans for integration with Appstore games as well.

We will be keeping a close eye on this and will continue to bring you the latest news as it develops.  Stay tuned.

  1. I wonder how they’ll solve the chicken/egg problem? Without official software support, this is useless to those of is who don’t jailbreak. Software developers won’t add support unless a significant number of people buy and use these.

Not to mention how it transforms a slick and pocketable iPhone into a first-gen, not-really-portable PSP form factor.

It’s a neat idea but it’s got an uphill climb. 🙁

  2. Agreed. I’m not really too interested in this, but I want to see how it works out. Looks interesting, but I don’t want that much extra bulk. Then it’d be like my PSP, and it was extremely inconvenient bringing something of that size around with me.
