I’m not exactly into coding or 3D engines, or any type of game-making for that matter; but the Unreal Engine 3 just blew my mind away. As an innocent bystander looking at the screenshots, all I can say is that I’m mightily impressed. This same engine was used to make Gears of War 2, Unreal Tournament III, and other console games that you’ll find on the Xbox 360 or PS3.
We, as iPhone gamers, have not seen such graphics available on the iPhone or iPod Touch just yet. The best we’ve seen comes from Gameloft’s NOVA or Modern Combat: Sandstorm, and the bringing of the Unreal Engine 3 would start a whole new 3D revolution. Epic, the creators for the 3D engine, did not announce whether or not they will start licensing the engine, but they did state that they may start in the near future.
Epic expanding into the mobile gaming market would prove to be beneficial for both gamers and developers as Epic would have the chance to increase profits and revenues even more. But it isn’t just the iPhone that’s running this engine; Epic plans on revealing the engine running on yet another phone during CES, an event that takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 7th to the 10th.
If the Unreal Engine 3 ever comes to light on the App Store, it will only support the iPhone 3GS and third gen iPod Touch. OpenGLES 2.0 support is required for shaders and other graphical effects not available on the previous generation devices.
Whether or not this is just a tech demo or coming to a future iPhone near you, we don’t know. All we know is that the iPhone is more powerful than we think.
