Zen Bound Review: Just Relax!

Zen Bound has been out for a while, but Chillingo (along with Secret Exit) has already proven its dedication to this fantastic game by releasing a rather large update (v1.2.1) which includes an additional 25 levels as part of the nostalgia tree. I have found Zen Bound to a very enjoyable game that is especially fun when I don’t have the energy for an intensive thinking or action game.

For those of you that haven’t yet heard about Zen Bound, it is a simple yet fun game where the player wraps a wooden object with rope. The rope paints the object a given color as you go. Once enough of the object is wrapped, you can wrap the rope around a nail on the object to complete the puzzle. As simple as that sounds, the production values and sounds of the game are just fantastic. When I first heard about the game, I thought the premise was way too simplistic (wrapping an object with rope). However, playing through the game has made me a believer. If you are at all inclined to play a relaxing puzzle game, then picking up Zen Bound is an easy decision.

Polish, Polish, Polish: This is one of the most polished games on the app store. The 3D rendering, sounds, visuals, and gameplay are polished to perfection. If there is one thing that you can’t say about Zen Bound, you can’t say that it isn’t polished.

Soundtrack: The music in Zen Bound really could make or break the game. Fortunately, the soundtrack is awesome and makes the game! I really enjoy just listening to the relaxing music while wrapping away.

Controls: Zen Bound’s controls really shine! They did a fabulous job of combining touch and accelerometer controls into one smooth control scheme. The accelerometer changes the angle of the rope while the touch controls move the object and are used for the menu.

It isn’t an Action Game: This is the only complaint that I could find about Zen Bound. It isn’t an action game. Some people just don’t seem to like a relaxing puzzle, but I am not one of those people. I think Zen Bound has its place on my iPod (and it probably will on yours too). It is a very fun, relaxing puzzle game.

I have been enjoying Zen Bound for quite some time now, and I highly recommend this game for any puzzle lover. In fact, I would say that Zen Bound is a must have game due to its polish and price. For the current price of 2.99, it is a great deal. However, I still think Zen Bound is easily worth the original price tag of $4.99.

Zen Bound was developed by Secret Exit and published by Chillingo. It is available for the iPhone and iPod Touch for $2.99. I played through version 1.2.1 on an iPod Touch 2G.
