Capcom have released Mega Man II to the App Store. The game is a remake of the classic NES game of the same name. As Mega Man, you take on nine different bosses and fight your way through side scrolling levels. The game looks and sounds authentic like the original, but your playing field of view is compressed because the actual playing area is inside of an arcade unit.
To play, you hold the iPhone vertically and look at an arcade machine. Then, to control Mega Man, there’s a joystick you touch to move and two buttons on the machine to jump or run. This makes for a tiny viewing area. It feels like there’s a lot of wasted space on the screen, and perhaps an option to change the view to horizontal would help to fix this problem. Here’s Capcom’s description on the release:
• Utilize virtual arcade controls to control the blue bomber.
• Rebalanced gameplay for the iPhone experience.
• Battle your way through 14 levels, and conquer 9 unique bosses, each with a unique weapon!
• Bringing the original classic NES game to the palm of your hand!
My first impression of the game is that it’s very frustrating. Controlling your character with the directional stick is awkward and will cause you to die often. It just feels too unresponsive to play, and at $4.99, only serious Mega Man fans should bother picking this up. Mega Man games need responsive controls to deal with the difficulty, and I just can’t see this series cutting it on the iPhone.
Buy Mega Man II from the App Store.
