WordFu is a great word game with a unique personality. The premise of the game is easy: you’re given nine letters to spell as many words as you can within the time limit. ngmoco has managed to put a ‘Kung-Fu’ spin on the word game genre here, and it turns out to be a lot of fun.
The first thing you’ll notice is the music and sound effects. Almost any action will make the iPod Touch let out a funny ‘YE-OWW’ or related Kung-Fu sound effect. It makes the game light-hearted and puts you in a good mood to play. The music also sets the mood well, with soft dojo background music playing throughout.
The game itself is very simple. You’re originally presented with nine letters and a small amount of time to either get all new letters by shaking the iPod, or trying to roll a single die if the rest seem good. This part of the game is very important because you are setting up the letters you will be playing with for the round. The timer creates tension and this makes the game more exciting than being presented with letters and just being told to ‘Go!’. Once you’ve chosen your letters, the round begins. Now, your goal is to score as many points as possible by creating words with your given letters. By tapping letters and then shaking, you can get your points to go up fairly quickly.
There are a number of powerups to keep rounds feeling fresh. There’s a freeze timer powerup, double points for a short amount of time, and flick a specific die. These will drop throughout a round, depending on how well you are doing.
The game includes a versus mode over WiFi, but ngmoco promises an asynchronous versus mode later on in a free update. A ‘Hall of Legend’ holds your various accomplishments from throughout the game, and gives you goals to work towards.
A strength and downside of WordFu is its simplicity; while it is very easy to pick up, the game may be put down too quickly because gamers feel they’ve seen all they will see after a couple of rounds. But WordFu tries hard to hold your attention and I think it does a good job at it. WordFu is the perfect word game to pick up and play for a couple of minutes at a time.
